Four kittens were left in a box to die on the side of a road during last week's snow storm.
13 ABC's Christine Long reports from Fremont at the Sandusky County Humane Society with the story of their rescue.
The manager of the shelter says the kittens were abandoned to freeze to death likely by someone who couldn't afford them anymore.
They're now named Eenie, Meenie, Miney, and Mo. Mo has been adopted, but Eenie, Meenie, and Miney are still looking for homes.
This is a picture that you may find adorable and upsetting. It was taken by the Sandusky County Humane Society volunteer who found the kittens half buried under snow in a ditch after getting a concerned call from a neighbor.
"Took him about 45 minutes but he did end up finding the box and he reached in to pick up one cat and found four," says Kelly Askins, manager of the Humane Society of Sandusky County.
The kittens were found in a box here on County Road 37 on the side of the road. It was the day after Christmas and you remember there was a big snowstorm. A lot of snow plows were going by. One more truck goes by, those kittens would've been buried alive.
Askins says the four kittens are five months old.
"They're way too sweet to be stray cats. These were somebody's pets," says Askins.
She says's it's happening more and more.
Meet Hope, a 9 week old German Shepard.
The puppy was found on Friday stranded in the parking lot of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
When the Wilbur family of Fremont heard Hope's story, they adopted her saying all of the animals deserve a loving home.
"It's sad because they can't help that they're brought into the world and to take care of them, that's all that they ask, just for some love," says Sherry Wilbur of Fremont.
"We have a seven page waiting list right now," says Askins.
That list is for people looking to surrender their animals to the shelter, but adoptions are slow.
Askins says pet owners need to be responsible.
"If you are in any way, shape, or form you think that you're not going to be able to afford a pet, don't make the commitment to get one," says Askins.
