PNC Bank customers who use Internet services to pay bills and monitor accounts are growing increasingly frustrated over what appear to be targeted cyber attacks that shut down the site.
Since December 11th, the attacks have disrupted service on the site numerous times, but have grown steadier in recent days.
That prompted dozens of angry customers to go on the company's Facebook page to vent.
"This has been going on for a month, it's unacceptable," one customer wrote.
"Seriously, fix the website or get real security in place to keep the hackers out." said another.
It's a growing problem in banking known as a ddos attack, distributed denial of service.
The goal is not to break into accounts or steal personal information but rather to flood the page with so many requests for information that it locks up and can't be accessed by real customers.
PNC spokesman Fred Solomon did not return our call requesting comment but in a posted statement to customers the company admitted its frustration in not being able to address the issue.
"We have no information," it says in part, "regarding timing, duration or intensity of this potential threat."
A group called al-Qassam Cyber Fighters says in web postings that members continue to launch ddos attacks against financial institutions. We have no way of knowing if group members are actually behind the PNC webpage attacks.
Law enforcement says the real concern is whether these ddos attacks can be used as a distraction to launch a real assault on either the money or personal information of customers.
PNC Bank is assuring customers that all account and personal information is safe.
