It's an unfortunate but common crime this time of year: home break-ins.
Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn says, "we always have the increase because people have brand new items. They put the boxes out at the curb and the burglars drive through on trash night and notice who has the new items."
The latest target seems to be south western Wood County. In the last few days, 4 homes, some of them on the same street, were burglarized. Sheriff Wasylyshyn says they swiped things like cash, TV's and laptops.
"One of the homes had an alarm system so they didn't steal anything because the alarm scared them away," Wasylyshyn said.
These crimes are happening on rural streets and in quiet neighborhoods. Basically the crooks are kicking down doors and robbing homes in broad daylight.
"People work during the day, people are gone so its wide open," the Sheriff said.
He also says the best way to stay safe, especially in small communities is to get to know your neighbors and then look out for each other. And if you see something suspicious, always call police.
Right now the investigation continues. Sheriff Wasylyshyn says detectives did recover evidence from the scenes that could link a suspect or suspects to the crime. However, at this time, there have been no arrests.
