It's his first week in office, and 5th District State Representative, Republican Greg Lucas is getting attention. He plans to introduce a bill it making it legal for teachers to carry weapons to school. Lucas says he will co-sponsor the measure with eight other Pennsylvania lawmakers.
After the tragedy in Newtown he decided that teachers and school administrators have the right to protect themselves and their students. He told WICU/SEE News that he is in total agreement with the NRA on the idea of places armed security in schools, but he doesn't believe the funding will be available.
He says only teachers who would feel comfortable with the concept, would have to get involved, perhaps three or four people per building. Lucas says his proposed bill would require background checks and the same training that police officers receive. School districts would have control of implementing the whole system.
Lucas says he's receiving 50/50 feedback on the concept. Lucas himself is a former teacher, a longtime gun owner and an NRA instructor.
