The annual Times News Open bowling tournament is golden this year. What's known as Erie's premier "scratch" bowling tournament in is celebrating its 50th year.
The event always has good support, averaging 130 bowlers over the last ten or fifteen years, but for the anniversary - 224 bowlers signed up.
One of the big changes over the years is the scoring technology, said David Hewett. "We used to keep score with pencil and paper, but with improvements in bowling technology, that's all automated and we get to watch the bowling a little bit more."
The the field will be narrowed to 48 bowlers for next weekend. The final 16 after the next cut, will compete January 19 and 20 for a 25 hundred dollar prize and a crystal bowling pin trophy.
