Falcons Score Late To Tie Canisius, 2-2

Posted: Updated:

BUFFALO - The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Canisius Saturday afternoon, battling to a 2-2 draw with the Golden Griffins at the Buffalo State Ice Arena. Freshman Ben Murphy and sophomore Ryan Carpenter scored the Falcon goals, while senior Andrew Hammond stopped 29-of-31 shots in the contest.

The Falcons once again took advantage of the power play, going 1-for-2 with the man advantage. The Orange and Brown held Canisius scoreless on two power-play chances.

Bowling Green scored the game's first goal, netting an even-strength tally at 7:27 of the first period.

Freshman Brent Tate intercepted an errant pass at the top of the Griffins zone, before skating towards the net for a 2-on-1 scoring chance. Tate baited the defender, eventually sending a pass to Murphy at the far circle. Murphy snapped a shot on net, beating Canisius goaltender Keegan Asmundson for his first collegiate goal.

Both teams shared a number of scoring chances in the remainder of the opening frame, but Canisius would score the only other goal in the stanza.

With five seconds remaining, an attempted breakout pass in the Falcons' zone deflected towards the blue line. Canisius defenseman Ben Danford skated in from the point, firing a shot towards the Bowling Green cage. Canisius forward Ryan Bohrer caught a piece of the shot, deflecting the puck past Hammond to tie the game.

Both teams were held off the board in the middle frame, with Hammond and Asmundson stopping 12 and 11 shots, respectively.

Tied at 1-1 at the beginning of the third period, Canisius forward Matthew Grazen took advantage of a Falcon defensive turnover, scoring just 1:30 into the final frame. Grazen stole the puck from a Bowling Green defender, before skating in on a partial breakaway toward the Falcon net. Grazen shot blocker side, beating Hammond for the 2-1 Canisius lead.

With just over four minutes remaining the Golden Griffins committed a hooking penalty, giving Bowling Green the man advantage. It didn't take long for the Falcons to capitalize, scoring the game tying goal just 13 seconds into the power play. Junior Bryce Williamson fed a pass to the point, where Dajon Mingo was waiting to fire a shot. Asmundson made the initial save, but Carpenter was waiting to knock home his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Carpenter's tally marked the final goal of the contest, as neither team was able to score in the overtime period.

With the non-conference tie, Bowling Green now has a 4-10-5 overall record, while Canisius sits at 6-8-5 overall.

Murphy's goal marked the first point of his Bowling Green career, and the fourth Falcon this season secure his first point as a member of the Orange and Brown (Dajon Mingo, Mark Cooper and Brent Tate).

Tate's assist on Murphy's goal marked the second point of his career in only his second game. Tate's first point (assist) came back in the Falcons' 6-1 loss to Michigan State at the BGSU Ice Arena (11/3/12).

Mingo and Williamson both secured an assist on Carpenter's power-play goal, increasing their point streaks to three and two games, respectively.
