Would it enhance safety if teachers were allowed to keep a gun locked in their classroom? As we've been reporting, 5th District State Representative Greg Lucas plans co-sponsor legislation that would allow public school teachers to be armed. Just the idea of it is stirring lots of reaction.
Lucas, a former teacher and an N-R-A instructor is one of eight pa lawmakers who plan to introduce a measure making it legal for teachers to be licensed and trained to keep a locked weapon at school. Lucas tells us that feedback on the idea is mixed. "Some are very much for it, some are against it," said Lucas, "and before they judge I want them to take a look at the legislation I've put out there, it makes sense it really does."
We asked for your input on our WICU facebook page and there's quite a conversation going. Here's a sample of the comments.
"Will teachers require a pay raise due to additional responsibility? Let's not be naive about this, a gunman's first target will be a teacher." - John Groh
"Arm the teachers they are on the front line." - Tony Piotrowski
"As a teacher, I say no way! I believe that arming an administrator is too drastic as well. If they're going to discuss arming someone in each school, they should seriously consider bringing in those officials trained in such measures. For example, police officers." - Scott R. Tenney
"I would not send my kids to a school with armed teachers, guns have no place in schools. I realize that tragedies happen, but I don't believe arming teachers and hiring armed guards is the answer." - Heather Waring
Lucas says he prefers the N-R-A recommendation of armed guards at school, but doesn't think funds are there to support it. Under his plan, teachers would be gun owners who volunteer to help at school in case of an emergency. You can add your thoughts on our WICU/WSEE facebook page.
