Local Girl In Running for Tissue Box Design

Darby Blanchette, 10, is turning sickness into smiles.

Blanchette entered a contest with White Cloud after a stay at Saint Vincent, where she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

She tells us she originally started to color just to keep her mind off of her recent diagnosis. She didn't find out until just January 8 that her drawing hade made it to the Top 10 of the contest. 

On her design, Darby wrote, "turning sickness into smiles." She says its how she feels about her diagnosis.

"I knew that what just happened to me, is probably going to happen to a bunch of other people and they are eventually going to get used to it," said Blanchette. "If they're still feeling bad now, they'll learn to turn it into smiles."

If Darby's design wins, Saint Vincent will receive $15,000 from White Cloud.
