Oilers Hold Off Dragons, Win 67-61

FINDLAY - The University of Findlay women's basketball team earned a 67-61 win over Tiffin University on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Croy Gymnasium to run their record to 11-3 on the year.

The Oilers, who improved to 8-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with the victory, found themselves down by a score of 58-54 with 3:20 remaining in the game.  Senior forward Kayla Brown then cut the lead to one with a three pointer and made two free throws after a turnover by the Dragons to make the score 59-58 in favor of Findlay with 2:42 left.

After a few failed possessions by both teams, senior guard Laura Peihl converted a layup off of a nice feed from junior guard Ashley Andrews to give the Oilers a 61-58 advantage with under two minutes remaining in the contest.  Senior guard Kendra Elam then iced the game at the free throw line, converting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch.

Brown led the team with 13 points while senior forward Tai Dotson had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Elam finished with nine points, all from the free throw line, while Piehl and junior guard Karli Beasley scored seven points apiece.

Freshman forward Margaret Wuebker set a new career-high with ten rebounds while Andrews had four steals.

Jessica Harris led Tiffin with 16 points and 11 boards.

The Oilers shot 37 percent (20-of-54) from the floor and held the Dragons to a 32.1 percent (17-of-53) shooting clip.

Findlay will now prepare to travel to Ashland, Ohio on Thursday, Jan. 17 to take on Ashland University, the top-ranked team in the nation.  The GLIAC contest is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
