BOWLING GREEN – The Bowling Green State University track and field team competed in the BGSU Collegiate Opener Saturday afternoon, placing fourth out of five teams at the Perry Field House. As a team, the Falcons finished with 72.5 points, defeating IPFW's team score of 28. Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan came out on top, earning a score of 215. Toledo (90.5) and Dayton (80) finished second and third, respectively.
Redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger highlighted the meet for Bowling Green, once again earning a first place finish in the weight throw. Pleger's throw of 60-feet-7 in set a new personal best, beating out her previous mark of 59-feet-8.25 set last month at the EMU Eagle Holiday Tournament. Sophomore Nicolette Johnson placed second among BG throwers (sixth overall), setting a new personal best with a throw of 51-feet-7.75.
"Brooke (Pleger) took another big step in a short period of time," said head coach Lou Snelling. "The win was great to see, it speaks a lot to her focus and work ethic, as well as what coach (Matt) Conly is putting together for her as far as training."
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Sinclair earned a third place finish in the 400, setting a personal best with a time of 58.25 in her first action wearing the Orange and Brown. Sophomore Natalie Sommerville backed up Sinclair with a seventh place finish at 1:00.66, followed by sophomore Lisa Worthy at 1:01.19 in 12th place.
"It was her (Sinclair) first time in a Bowling Green uniform, so It was nice to see her really take that step," said Snelling. "It's great to see that immediate impact from that first recruiting class."
Sinclair also helped the Falcons earn a second place overall finish in the 4x400 relay, with Bowling Green finishing the race in 3:56.15. Strong performances from Felicia Jefferson, Taylor Rambo and Demetra Taylor aided in the Falcons shaving roughly two seconds off their 1600 time from last month's meet at EMU.
In distance, Bowling Green showed well in the 3000, placing two athletes among the top three finishers. Redshirt Freshman Andrea Alt led all Falcons with a finish time of 10:31.54, placing second. Fellow redshirt freshman Jasmine Redman wasn't far behind, earning a third place finish with a time of 10:36.89. Redshirt junior Abby Koch also placed in the top ten, earning an eighth-place finish with a time of 10:47.30.
The Falcons are right back in action next Saturday, heading to Michigan for an all-day slate of events at the Simmons Harvey Invitational.
