Swimming Comes Up Short at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI - The Bowling Green State University swim team fell just shy of a road win at Eastern Michigan, losing to the Eagles 166-128 in Jones Natatorium.

The Falcons won both relays and captured seven of fourteen event wins, including a 1-5 sweep of the 100-yard freestyle. 

"It was a great start to the second part of the season," said head coach Petra Martin.  "The kids are doing a nice racing and being aggressive with things.  We're happy with the performance and looking forward to the next couple meets leading into MAC Championships."

The Falcons opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay (Harris, Kain, Bullock and Bennet; 1:46.64).  Then Emily Waller swam a season-best 10:31.13 in the 1000-yard freestyle to finish fourth.  Joëlle Scheps and Hannah Newman finished second and third in the 200 freestyle, earning points for the Falcons. 

Alexa Harris won the 100-yard backstroke, while Alexis Kain and Daniela Carrillo went 1-2 in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Emily Bennet dominated the sprint events, winning both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.  Carrillo picked up her only win in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Kain finishing in third.  In the 200 IM, Scheps, Harris and Stephanie Boyle all earned points finishing in the second through fourth slots. 

The Falcons ended the meet with another relay win, this time in the 400 freestyle relay, where a team of Bennet, Kayla Effinger, Brittany Szekely and Newman outpaced Eastern Michigan to win by more than three seconds.

Bowling Green is back in Cooper Pool next week for the final home meet of the season.  The Falcons take on both Michigan State and Buffalo on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m.
