BGSU Tennis: Falcons bounce back with eight Saturday wins at IU

Posted: Updated:

BLOOMINGTON, IND. – The Bowling Green State University tennis team posted eight total victories in second-day action at the adidas/IU Winter Invitational, including a 5-2 doubles record on Saturday (Jan. 12). The three-day, four-team event, hosted by Indiana University, is being held at the IU Tennis Center.

After winning just one total match on Friday, the Brown and Orange went 3-4 in singles and won five of seven doubles matches on Saturday.

Three Falcons went undefeated in Saturday action, as senior Katie Grubb and junior Nikki Chiricosta each were 3-0 while freshman Katie Brozovich was 2-0 on the day. Senior Jade Johnson won two of her three Saturday matches, while junior Emily Reuland went 1-1.

The Falcons had primarily competed against players from the host school, No. 49-ranked Indiana, on Friday. On Saturday, BGSU played all seven singles matches vs. Marquette competitors, while playing doubles matches vs. teams from both IU and MU.

The fourth school in the invite is No. 52 Missouri, but the Falcons have yet to play a match against the Tigers.

The tournament originally called for seven non-bracketed flights of singles play, along with one 16-spot doubles bracket. On Saturday, however, the doubles bracket was scrapped as too many matchups involved two teams from the same school

Saturday's singles highlights included a straight-sets win by Chiricosta over Marquette's Ana Pimienta at the top flight, and a fifth-flight victory -- also in straight sets -- by Brozovich against the Golden Eagles' Aina Hernandez. Grubb won her second singles match in as many days, defeating MU's Aleeza Kanner in a third-set super tiebreaker at the sixth flight.

Johnson and fellow senior Maddy Eccleston each lost narrow singles decisions. At the second flight, Eccleston fell to MU's Erin Gebes in a tiebreaker, while Johnson lost a heartbreaker at the fourth flight. Rocio Diaz of MU pulled out a 12-10 decision in the tiebreaking round of that match.

Doubles play saw seven of the eight Falcons record at least one victory, with Chiricosta, Grubb and Johnson each winning twice on Saturday. Head coach Penny Dean mixed and matched her doubles duos on the second day of the tournament, and Grubb combined with both Eccleston and Brozovich for 8-3 wins, with one victory vs. Marquette and the other against IU.

Chiricosta teamed up with Reuland for an 8-2 victory against an MU team, and Chiricosta then was paired with Johnson in an 8-1 dismantling of another MU tandem. Hill and Johnson won an 8-3 outcome vs. the Hoosiers.

Grubb has an overall record of 4-1 in the tourney to date, while Chiricosta is 3-2 and Brozovich 2-2 so far.
