The first of two giant lake freighters scheduled to be repaired in Erie this winter is expected in port sometime tonight. Crews will spend the next two months working on the ships.
The 1000 foot long freighter Presque Isle spent today in Lake Erie off the tip of Presque Isle, waiting for the right wind conditions to enter the channel into Presque Isle Bay. The other freighter is due in port later this week.
The winter lay up will provide a lot of work at the port to have the ships ready for another season on the Great Lakes.
Tod Eagleton of Erie Sand and Gravel said, "A lot of different steel work, some repair work. A company is coming in for conveyor belt work. So different work, most of it on-going work to keep everything safe and current."
The Presque Isle was built in Erie at the old Litton shipyard in the early 1970's.
