Another Ohio district is considering a plan to train and arm school workers. Leaders in the Edgerton Local School District are working with the village's police department to train workers on firearm safety.
The district already has one safety resource officer, but this would allow more workers to carry guns in the schools. Those staff members would have to pass the same firearms qualifications as any police officer in the state of Ohio.
"I don't see a lot of questions or opposition coming from local taxpayers," says Superintendent Andy Morr. "I do feel they would be behind the board of education if they chose to do that."
Police Chief Jeremy Jones also agrees with the measure. He says the extra trainees could help his small force if an emergency were to ever happen.
"I can't be here all the time," says Jones. "So if somebody comes in our schools, we can be prepared."
The Montpelier School District created a similar measure earlier this month. The Edgerton school board plans to draft a resolution on the new safety proposal next month.
