One month to the day after the Newtown school massacre, the Republican controlled New York Senate has passed new gun control legislation. Some call it a feather in Governor Andrew Cuomo's political hat.
If enacted, the measure aims to keep guns out of the hands of mental health patients. It will also ban high capacity magazines and assault weapons and require universal background checks on all gun purchases or transfers. Governor Cuomo told reporters, "I think after what happened in Connecticut and in Webster, this issue jumped to the forefront."
We asked local gun owner Doug Boldt for reaction to the measure. "I think gun owners are scared," said Boldt. "I think we're seeing a big push for gun control and an attack on gun ownership, and I think the real focus is the criminals, who by their very definition don't follow laws, so to pass more laws and think it's going to have an impact on crime I think is a little short sighted."
