OH schools consider teacher radios as safety step

NORTH CANTON, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio school district stepping up security following the Connecticut school massacre is considering buying special radios that employees could use to communicate if an armed intruder attacked.

The Repository newspaper reports the plan was among security considerations the North Canton schools superintendent outlined during a meeting with parents Tuesday night. The idea is that staff could use the digital, citizens band-style radios to alert others in a school building if a shooter attacked.

The district plans to have every teacher trained in special lockdown procedures. It's also considering installing security entrances with bullet-resistant glass at three elementary schools.

Districts elsewhere around the state have been reviewing their security measures. One in northwest Ohio drew attention for its plans to arm a handful of non-teaching employees with handguns.
