Many different students came together with one purpose today. Unity.
The University of Toledo kicked off its Unity Week with students walking arm-in-arm during a march through campus.
"Everyone to comes together, to remember this time and celebrate the differences and similarities of all cultures because we can learn a lot from everyone," said UT senior Malcolm McClinton.
The event started with a moment of silence to remember the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The theme for this year's week of unity is "Make A Way" and it is aimed to encourage awareness to bring more acceptance and tolerance to the divisiveness in the community.
Some students said the week's events really do bring them together to remember the importance of tolerance.
Students are looking forward to an event Friday night – that will keep them behind closed doors, all night.
"There is a lock-in with all of the different student organizations at the Rec Center. There will be a lot of different activities and it will be a time for us to come together in a positive environment," McClinton said.
Students feel these events aren't just for the UT students, but for the Toledo Community too.
"The university of Toledo is an essential part of the Toledo community and having that unity week just gets the kids energized for the MLK Day," McClinton said.
The main event will be the MLK Unity Celebration on Monday morning at 9. UT President Lloyd Jacobs will speak to students and community members, along with Toledo Mayor Michael Bell.
Afterwards, attendees will enjoy a free community luncheon. The university is asking those who come to bring a canned good or nonperishable food item to donate to the MLK Kitchen for the Poor.
