Speaking in Erie today, U.S. Senator Pat Toomey talked about the plan outlined yesterday by President Obama to control gun violence. It includes reinstating the assault weapons ban and limiting the size of ammunition magazines.
Toomey said he thinks the real focus should be on potentially dangerous people with mental health problems who get guns.
He said, "I think the real focus and where we can really make some progress to make Pennsylvania and America safer is to make progress on identifying the mental illness, curing it where we can and separating these people from their ability to do harm when we must."
Toomey told us he is not sure the assault weapons ban will actually come to a vote.
