A new report released today cites the need for improved leadership and accountability at the Erie County Prison.
The report by two consultants comes in the wake of a series of employee suspensions and firings in the past year. It says there is a need for stronger leadership from Warden Jim Veshecco.
Erie County Executive Barry Grossman agrees. But he has no plans to replace the warden.
Grossman said, "I think he got handed a subordinate staff in the last couple of years that did not have his back. He is not naive. He knows he has dropped the ball a few times but I really beleive a lot of it came down that he did not have a great support staff over there. And we're going to correct it."
The consultants are suggesting a co-warden be hired to share the top job. Right now Grossman is against that idea. he wants to hire a deputy warden and groom him for the top position.
