Many events are planned around the region to mark the annual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. One holiday tradition that always gets an early start is the reception and program featuring the winners of the annual Martin Luther King essay contest. The event took place at the M.L.K. Center on at 312 Chestnut Street.
Students in different age categories are selected based on their essays that capture the spirit of Dr. King's message and how to carry it forward in their generation.
The annual King Memorial March takes place Monday at 10:00 AM. Marchers will gather at Perry Square beginning at 9:00 AM. The march will progress to the King Center at 3rd and Chestnut.
At 11:00 AM a Memorial Luncheon is scheduled at Gannon University's Waldron Center. Organizers will collect books for the MLK center and will air a webcast of the Obama inauguration.
At noon at Penn State Behrend's Reed Union building - you can experience "Let Freedom Sing" a film with historical footage and music that inspired the civil rights movement.
At 2:00 PM The Erie Playhouse hosts the King Holiday Expo - with 15 performances including rap artists, dancers and gospel choirs.
