SYLVANIA, Ohio -
With temperatures dropping and more
and more people looking to keep their homes warm this week, here's an example
out of Sylvania
about how careful you need to be.
A family in Sylvania today woke up to
a crackling noise Monday that turned out to be a fire traveling up to the
second floor of their home.
Investigators on scene say the home had no smoke detectors inside.
That fire happened in
the 4600 block of Sheringham Lane. Firefighters got the call just after
3:00am. The home owners told fire
fighters that there was a fire in the fire place that was extinguished at
around 10:00pm. Investigators are looking at that the chimney as the root of
today's fire.
Everyone got out safely
despite the lack of smoke detectors which officials say are essential especially
if you're going to turn on a heather or furnace for the first time in a long
time.
"In today's world I
can't believe anybody would not have smoke detectors. We give them away for free from our
department. I'm sure all the other fire
departments do the same thing. They were
very lucky to get out uninjured with an instance of something like this," said Sylvania Township fire chief Jeffrey
Kowalski
To be proactive about
smoke detectors the chief tells 13abc that Sylvania Township fire fighters will
be back out in that neighborhood this weekend to check smoke detectors, help
people with replacement batteries, and even give them a free smoke detector if
they need it.
