Residents across Northwest Ohio, Southeast Michigan and much of the country are bundling up to beat the frigid temperatures. Locally, we're seeing the lowest temperatures and wind chills so far this winter season.
The wind chills are what doctors are most concerned about, and they want to make sure everyone remembers to bundle up before heading out.
Brian Kaminski is Medical Director of the ER at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He says cold, arctic weather can be dangerous if you're not careful, especially for the elderly and small children.
"The things that seem to be most affected by the cold are toes and fingers and then the face, the nose are also susceptible to cold weather injuries," he says. "Hats with hoods and scarves will protect those sensitive areas."
Humans aren't the only ones facing dangers in the sub-zero temperatures. Your furry friends are also at risk. Animal experts say, if it's too cold for you, it's likely too cold for your pet.
If they have to be outside, The Humane Society recommends giving animals some sort of shelter from the elements and fresh water, but a cozy place inside is ideal.
"If you go out and start shivering right away, your pet is going to do the same thing," says Cyndi Condit with the Toledo Area Humane Society.
