What is going to happen when Hugo Chávez, yearlong socialist and liberation leader of Venezuela in fact dies? Ecuador, as one of Venezuela’s closest partners in South America, might feel the loss of Chávez vastly as the two nations cooperate on a number of levels. However, as a sign that Latin American collaboration in terms of tourism will persist, Gulliver Expeditions is now offering transnational tours starting in Ecuador and extending to Peru and Colombia.
Quito, Ecuador (PRWEB) January 22, 2013
After Hugo Chávez has advocated over many years the integration and collaboration between many South American states, he is now expected to pass away soon and especially Venezuela’s Latin American allies, including Ecuador, are questioning whether the established cooperative relationships will continue without Chávez. Rafael Correa, Ecuador’s president, has said in a recent interview about Chávez’ health condition that, “if the gravity of his illness meant he could not continue to lead Venezuela, the revolutions must continue, in Venezuela, in Ecuador, in Argentina, in Bolivia." What Correa is talking about is the movement that has brought together Latin American countries in order to minimize the influence of their big and mighty “neighbor”, the United States.
Therefore, Venezuela and Ecuador have over several years passed a number of collaboration agreements on education, agriculture, trade, energy or tourism. For example, an oil refinery is being built on Ecuador’s North coast with interests held by Ecuador and Venezuela. This is one of the agreements that aims on limiting the influence of the United States in Latin America, where Venezuela owns 12 refineries. In terms of tourism, the two nations have agreed on the exchange of information on popular tourist destinations in each country as well as on the collaboration in terms of developing a joint tourism product, following Simon Bolivar, a former Latin American independence leader, on his path to independence.
However, not only Ecuador and Venezuela have come to agreements in the spirit of Latin American liberation, but also, for example the two former arch-enemies Ecuador and Peru, who have fought many wars in the past over territories. Integration has been intensively promoted ever since the peace agreement in 1998 was signed. Infrastructure and transportation upgrades have been undertaken and many more are planned – road upgrades or new flight routes are the focus in order to support the growth of trade relations as well as tourism between these two countries.
TAME, one of Ecuador’s two biggest airlines, has launched three new international flight routes in the second half of 2012. Besides Caracas in Venezuela, TAME is now operating direct flights to Lima in Peru and Bogotá in Colombia. TAME is as well planning on launching a new direct route to Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the first months of 2013. Regarding other airlines operating on these routes already, it is obvious that there is continuous development going on in terms of transportation.
Now that all these developments towards more cooperation and liberation in many Latin American countries are happening, the Quito based adventure tour operator Gulliver Expeditions has seized the change to launch two cross-border products which start in Ecuador and continue through either Peru or Colombia.
The tour that extends to Peru includes first the Avenue of Volcanoes in Ecuador’s Andes, and then Lima and Cusco in Peru, where from the latter a tour to Peru’s archeological and cultural heritage, the Machu Picchu, is undertaken. Colombia with its colonial heritage and white sandy beaches can, as another option, be combined with the beautiful Avenue of Volcanoes where Ecuador’s highest volcanoes and high plains with its diverse flora and fauna can be found. Cities like Bogotá, the capital with its numerous heritage sites, Medellin in the valley of Aburra, and Cartagena on Colombia’s North coast are part of this cross-border journey.
Therefore, as trans-national cooperation has been established between some South American countries, and even though one of its initial mind setters might soon pass away, the ongoing developments in regards to infrastructure and transportation upgrades or expertise and trade exchanges are not likely to be slowing down. Therefore, seize the chance to explore respectively two South American countries in only one tour by travelling with a safe and experienced tour operator, such as Gulliver Expeditions or other.
