MONTPELIER, Ohio -
The Montpelier schools superintendent says the district is sticking to it's plan to allow some staff members to carry weapons.
Despite the controversy the superintendent says the district is working closely with the police department and that it is the best course of action to ensure safety. In fact he believes over time, other districts will follow suit.
Staff members will be allowed concealed carry throughout the building. For weeks it's been rumored janitors would be armed.
"That's never come out of my mouth so I don't know where that's come from. Everyone's that's asked I've said it's not the teaching staff and we're not releasing any names," says Jamie Grime, Montpelier Schools Superintendent
"There's been some people out there that aren't necessarily in favor of this, to those people I've said, that I agree with them. In an ideal world, we wouldn't even have to be talking or thinking about this," says Grime
In wake of the New town tragedy, many have been in favor police officers in schools. Grime says the district simply cannot afford that.
"We've had to make a lot of cuts in the last few years, I just think adding another $50,000 expenditure was fiscally irresponsible. A program like this can be laid out and have very little cost to the district," says Grime
The district is working closely with the Montpelier Police Department. Grime says despite the controversy, he still believes this is the best course of action to ensure safety.
"Being one of the first to do this there is isn't a manual out there on how to do it right. Take our time and implement this properly," says Grime
It's unclear at this point when staff will begin training or when the concealed carry will go into effect.
