THON, Penn State's biggest student fund raiser is getting some big help from GE Transportation. GE will match up to $20,000, the amount raised by students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
THON, the country's longest dance marathon raises funds to treat children with pediatric cancer. According to spokesman, Robb Frederick, Penn State Behrend students already have raised $14,000 for this year's THON, which begins Feb. 16.
GE's funding will support employees whose children are battling cancer. The money raised by THON is added to the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, which pays for research and treatments that are not covered by insurance.
The THON tradition culminates in a 46-hour dance marathon at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's main campus. Dancers have raised more than $89 million since 1977. A group of students from Behrend will travel to University Park to participate in the dance marathon.
