New cancer center at UT has new plan for treatment

Posted: Updated:

"It's really scary when you first get diagnosed."

Jennifer Hodgson got the scare of her life, when she was only 28 years old.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer was stressful enough, but going to so many different clinics and seeing so many new doctors made it worse.

"Right now in this new cancer center everybody is under one roof," said Dr. Changhu Chen of the University of Toledo Medical Center. "You come here one stop and you see everybody. The treatment plan is there."

The new Dana Cancer Center at UTMC houses everything a cancer patient needs to fight their decease.

The more centralized care will reduce the amount of stress patients and their families feel.

The state-of-the-art equipment to treat all types of cancer is more precise and requires less time getting radiation treatment.

The center also offers treatments one wouldn't expect – treatments for the mind and body.

"One of the things that we're offering is message therapy, aroma therapy and we're going to do some exercise therapy," said Alien Seifert the administrative director UTMC

Patients, like Hodgson, say this new treatment plan works.

"It's all about the people that are here," she said. "If it weren't for the people who treated me then I wouldn't be as happy as I am as positive as I am about my treatment."

UT President Lloyd Jacobs said he'd like to re-name the center to the Dana "NO" Cancer Center.

The facility will start treating patients next month.
