Bowling Green State University is looking add a few good men and women to it's police department. The deadline to apply is fast approaching.

Bowling Green State University has basic crime like any other colleges.

"I feel pretty safe campus I go running at night all the time too I like it," said student Whitney Wolff

This freshman was happy to hear the campus plans to beef up its security. The department plans to hire at least three police officers. The police chief says a few officers are retiring.

"In this case we're talking about a third of the department in one year. So that's going to be rough there's going to be some growing pains because the most senior folks are the ones that have all the knowledge and experience are the ones leaving. Its nice to get new ideas fresh faces with different backgrounds in the department but they are also brand new and need training," said BGSU Police Chief Monica Moll.

Applicants will be required to pass a written test and a physical fitness test.

"We are going to try something new where we use actors and set up scenarios to test their interpersonal skills and we rate each candidate on a list of dimensions. The main thing we are looking for is a good human being that has great interpersonal skills gets in the job for the right reason and just has a good attitude," said Chief Moll.

The chief encourages people from all walks of life to apply. She says having a diverse police department is important when patrolling the campus.

"I wouldn't say there's a total lack of diversity in your department. One area where I would like to increase the diversity is with racial minorities one of the things we need to do is cast the widest net possible I really want to encourage people to apply," said Chief Moll.

So that the university can continue to ensure a safe and secure environment.

"Do you think you could use more officers on campus?" said reporter Alexis Means

"I wouldn't mind having more officers but I don't think its necessary right now," said student Whitney Wolff.

The deadline to apply is February 8, 2013.  The university hopes to hire officers in July.
