New strain of stomach virus sweeps country

Posted: Updated:

Doctors say flu activity is falling across the country, but there's new concern about norovirus. A new strain of the stomach bug is sending patients to the emergency room across the country.

The virus isn't particularly dangerous to the average person, but it can be deadly to the young and old.

"This is one of the most contagious viruses we deal with," says Dr. Richard Besser. "No vaccine, no real treatment, except fluids to prevent hydration."

Health experts say the best way to stop noroviruses is by washing your hands. However, they say hand sanitizers are not effective in this case.
