Friends "Tie One On" in support of cheerleader fighting cancer

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

University of Toledo coaching staff and fans sported bow ties at Saturday's men's Rocket basketball game against Bowling Green to show their support for the fight against prostate cancer.

UT hosted its third annual "Tie One On" event. Supporters wore yellow bow ties to raise money for UT's Dana Cancer Center.

Freshman Christina Winterfeld said, "it makes me feel good, like I'm actually helping out the community and it makes me feel like I'm helping people I don't know."

The event took on a special significance for Rocket cheerleader Spencer Rizk. He was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer and just underwent surgery. He watched the game from the stands. Many of the bow ties were sponsored in his honor.

"I didn't ask anybody for anything of this. The cheerleaders are my family. Everybody's putting this together and seeing how much money a group of people at a university can give to such a great cause." Spencer said, "It means so much to me and everybody who has cancer just like me."

Spencer will find out this week if he's cancer free or needs more treatment.
