Northwood woman needs help saving family dog

Posted: Updated:

A Northwood woman is looking for help to save the life of her dog after a car accident. The family says they financially can't afford their dog's much needed surgery and if they can't get financial help, their dog may have to be put down for good.

14-month-old Grizzly is a 160 pound Red Newfoundland dog who can't walk. A car accident left him with a damaged leg and dislocated his hip. His owner, Wind Bearheart says if he doesn't have surgery, they'll have to put him to sleep and she's in a financial bind. They surgery needed is going to cost anywhere from $1,700-$2,500.

"That's too much, I've already spent $800," says Wind Bearheart. "I'm on disability, I drained my funds and I have no where to go."

Bearheart and her two dogs Grizzly and Chance were injured in a car accident Tuesday in Fulton County when another car ran an intersection hitting them. They say the insurance company so far is not covering the dog's medical expenses and so Bearheart's friend called us for action. She's trying to drum up financial support.

"I don't know what I'd do if I was in this situation," says Dawn Kurek, Bearheart's friend. "I hope that I would have enough friends to reach out and help me. She needs it. She don't ask nothing from nobody, as you can see, she don't ask for transportation, these are her wheels."

That's right, Grizzly and Chance are Bearheart's transportation as sled dogs. She uses them to take her around town for the daily necessities. But most of all, Bearheart says these dogs are her life.

Grizzly's surgery is tentatively set for Monday afternoon at The West Suburban Animal Clinic in Sylvania.

If you would like to help, Grizzly's Fund has been set up at Fifth Third Bank.  Donations will be accepted at any Fifth Third bank branch.
