Posted: Updated:

ADRIAN - On a night when points were hard to come by, senior Bryan Powell made the biggest shot of the game for Calvin as he made a contested three-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to give the Knights a 50-47 road victory at Adrian. The first meeting between the teams saw Calvin win 56-50 in Grand Rapids and this contest was very similar. Both teams dug in defensively as each team shot 36 percent from the floor.

Powell finished the game with a team-high 13 points off the bench. Tom Snikkers added 10 points and five rebounds. Senior Cody Barnes had the best offensive game for the Bulldogs with 22 points. He shot 8-of-16 from the floor (4-of-5 3FG) and also grabbed seven rebounds in 36 minutes. The team's leading scorer Eric Lewis was held to 10 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the floor. Adrian went to the free throw line just five times in the game but made all five attempts.

Calvin was the first team to crack double digits leading 11-9 with 9:02 left in the first half. The Knights took a 17-11 lead with 6:18 left but then Adrian closed out the half outscoring Calvin 14-3. Barnes nailed two triples and converted a layup in the final 3:27 of the half.

Adrian increased their 25-20 halftime lead to 29-20 early in the second half. Senior Sean Gallant made a layup and sophomore Adam Meier scored on a driving layup to give Adrian their largest lead of the game. Calvin (17-2, 8-0) entered the game ranked No. 17 by D3Hoops.com and quickly turned the tide back in their favor. The Knights went on a 18-6 spurt over the next seven minutes to lead 38-35 with 11:29 left in the contest.

Adrian (15-4, 4-4) never regained the lead and saw themselves down 47-40 with five minutes to go after a Mickey DeVries layup. The Bulldogs scored the next seven points to tie the game at 47-47 with 24 seconds left. Meier converted a three-point play followed by another basket by Meier with 1:40 left to cut the lead to two. Adrian got the ball back with under a minute and Lewis missed a shot, but Drew Torey hustled for the offensive rebound and Adrian called timeout. Barnes tried to drive to the right of the lane and a blocking foul was called sending the Romulus native to the line. Barnes made both free throws setting up the final dramatics. Powell called his own number and went one-on-one against Barnes pulling up from 23 feet and making his second triple of the night. Adrian burned their last timeout and needed to go full court. Barnes got a shot off but it was blocked from behind by DeVries at the horn.
