Eastwood schools adding more safety measures

Posted: Updated:

The tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut forced school districts across the county to take another look at safety.

At Eastwood Local Schools in Pemberville, the district is working to improve the security of all the buildings.  In fact, the school board recently approved a contract with Habitec Security to install more surveillance cameras and door buzzers in all four of the district's buildings.

"We just want to make sure that people coming to our buildings will have to be buzzed in so we know they have a purpose there," Brent Welker, Superintendent of Eastwood Local schools said.

Once the extra cameras and buzzers are installed, the district is going to take it a step further.  There are are plans to install a special laminate film on the doors and windows that will keep them from shattering.

"I think all of us have to be vigilant," Welker said.  "We all have to make sure that we're doing the best we can to harden our targets."

Parents are all for the added security.

"I'd rather be safe than sorry," Linda Clay, a mother of 3 said.

Clay says she welcomes the new safety measures, especially after what happened at Sandy Hook.

"That affected everyone, whether you knew them or not.  It hit home for everybody," she said. "I'd rather go that little extra mile trying to get access to the buildings than wishing something different would have been done."

The district already has cameras in the middle school and high school, as well as a school resource officer.

The superintendent says he hopes the new cameras and buzzers will be ready mid-February.
