Erie County Judge Shad Connelly this morning sentenced 31-year old Rachel Kozloff to 18-40 years in prison.
She was convicted last month for the fatal April 2012 shooting of her boyfriend Michael Henry in his East 18th Street apartment and risking the welfare of his baby Jackson who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.
During the trial, Kozloff's lawyer had argued the shooting was in self-defense. But the District Attorney successfully convinced the jury that Kozloff was jealous and that Henry was looking to get out of the relationship.
Both sides agree that it didn't help that she lied twice to police about her involvement and hid critical evidence including the murder weapon.
Before the judge passed sentence, he heard from Kozloff, her mother and pastor as well as Brian Henry, the brother of the victim, who told the judge he thinks about his brother every day.
He also said that the family must one day tell Jackson why his father is now an angel.
The case made history in Erie County Court because thousands of text messages between the two and their friends were entered into evidence.
