GRAND RAPIDS - Ty Ali (Chicago, Ill./Rich South H.S.) and Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Sylvania Southview H.S.) each tallied double figures for Lourdes, but Aquinas came away with a 65-44 victory over the Gray Wolves in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Monday evening at the Sturrus SFC in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Ali tallied 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, and pulled down eight rebounds while Scott added 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting. The rest of the Gray Wolves combined to shoot just 6-of-43 (14%) from the floor on the evening. Lourdes also committed 23 turnovers in the contest which led to 27 Aquinas points.
"I was really disappointed in our effort tonight," head coach Zareth Gray stated after the game. "We turned the ball over way too much and just did not play well at all."
The Saints jumped out to a 9-2 lead before Lourdes went on its lone run of the evening. Nine straight points, capped by a Courtney Slepko (Cleveland, Ohio/Normandy H.S.) three-pointer put the Gray Wolves on top by two. That would be Lourdes last lead of the night though, as Aquinas scored 10 points to seize control of the contest. The Saints took a 30-21 into the intermission.
An Ali jumper at the 15:28 mark of the second half pulled Lourdes to within six, 34-28, but the Gray Wolves could not get any closer. The margin remained between 10 and 13 until the final seven minutes when Aquinas went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 20.
Chelsea Matley led Aquinas (10-12, 6-10 WHAC) with 19 points while Allison Heberlein tallied a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Saints shot 43.3% from the floor for the game.
