The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a serious injury traffic crash that occurred on Newport Road, east of Newport Towne Drive, in Berlin Township, County of Monroe, State of Michigan.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Larry R. Martin, age 52, of Newport, MI was operating a black in color 2001 Kenworth Tractor Trailer exiting from the Marathon Gas Station located on the south side of Newport Road. As he was exiting, Mr. Martin turned left onto Newport Road as his tractor cleared the eastbound land of travel and middle turning lane. As Mr. Martin's tractor was in the westbound lane of travel, the rear section of his trailer, which is equipped with red and white reflectors, was still across the eastbound lane.
Danielle M. Romanoski, age 31, of Monroe, MI was operating a red in color 1997 Pontiac Grand AM eastbound on Newport Road along with her juvenile passenger, who was in the front passenger's seat. As Ms. Romanoski was in motion, she struck the rear of Mr. Martin's tractor having no signs of braking.
Speed appears to be a factor.
Monroe Community Ambulance Service, Berlin Fire Department and the Frenchtown Fire Department assisted at the scene.
