The Erie County Sheriff's Department today resumed processing new applications for concealed weapons permits. The process was halted earlier this week because of problems with the state computer system.
The whole system of permit applications has been overloaded for weeks, with a flood of applications. It's spurred by worries of possible new gun restrictions. But today, deputies were once again able to access the computer.
The sheriff says the surge of applications apparently caused the shut down.
Sheriff Bob Merski said, "The servers became overwhelmed and there wasn't any space for files. It could not store anymore."
On the plus side, while the one computer system was down, another system remain operable. And that allowed the department to finalize about 500 permits.
