It looks as if marathon weekend talks to avert a faculty strike at Pennsylvania's 14 state owned universities, including Edinboro has paid off. The two sides say they've reached a "framework" for a new contract. It's encouraging news for students and faculty at Edinboro who have been concerned about the threat of a work stoppage.
The proposed deal must still pass a final review process by the negotiating teams before it can be sent on to members of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, membership for a vote. Fifty-five hundred faculty members have been working under a contract extension since June of 2011. Talks over the weekend focused on health care and distance education issues. PASSHE spokesman, Kenn Marshall said the two sides have already reached agreement on compensation.
Jean Jones, APSCUF Union President at Edinboro says the progress is encouraging. Jones confirmed that at least 10 presidents of the 14 union chapters across the state must agree to the "framework" for it to move forward. The union representatives are expected to vote during a conference call at 5:00 PM on Monday.
