Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett gave his budget speech to a joint session of the state legislature today. The Governor challenged lawmakers to continue the tax and spending reforms his administration began last year. He wants to lift the cap on the tax for wholesale gasoline supplies, reform the state pension system with 401 (K) style retirement packages - and of course privatize the state liquor sales system. A big priority for those savings is education funding at every level.
"I propose adding another 6.4 million dollars toward our pre-k counts and the head start supplemental assistance programs. This money gives an additional 32 hundred children and their families access to quality full and part day programs as well as summer readiness programs," said Corbett. He added, "Why do we want to spend more on these programs? because every child in Pennsylvania deserves an equal start in life and I intend to see that promise kept."
The Corbett budget also calls for an increase in K-12 education funds and maintains funding for PA state and state related universities.
