It's been an inconsistent year for local ice fishermen. Last week's thaw cut short the start of the season. But the return of cold weather means ice fishing is back.
Ideally, fishermen like to have 4 inches of clear ice. Today, the ice was only about 3 inches thick at Misery Bay. But that was enough for plenty of fishermen.
The weather was perfect with sunshine, mild temperatures and no wind. A few fishermen set up their shanties. But many others didn't even bother, just sitting outside on the thin ice.
Fisherman Gary Belfiore said, "I'd like to see it a little bit thicker than 2 and-a-half-inches. But as long as it is not cracking or melting, we feel pretty safe right now."
Fisherman Tim Tomlin said, "I've been on worse ice than this, believe it or not. I would rather have 4-5 inches of ice. But I will take this. It is better than nothing."
The fishermen are worried they'll lose the ice again to warmer temperatures.
