Erie's rental inspection program will remain in effect for at least the next 4 years. Erie City Council today approved the extension to 2017. The program went into effect in 2006.
Rental units are inspected every 2 years at a cost of $40 per unit. The goal of the program is to improve health and safety.
Some landlords describe the program as unfair. And a lawsuit is pending. Council members say some changes are needed, including a speedier appeals process. But they think the program is working.
Council member Jessica Horan-Kunco said, "I think we are going to have an on-going discussion about the program. But by and large in terms of health and safety the program does improve the condition of properties in the City of Erie."
