US 24 REOPENS
US 24 reopens after a deadly accident closed the highway for nearly two days. The road shut down when a semi-truck slammed into a pick-up, causing a series of crashes near the Ohio-Indiana state line. One person was killed and 10 others were hurt. Investigators say fog caused extremely limited visibility moments before the pile-up.
OVI PREVENTION
The Ottawa Hills and St. John's communities continue to heal after a young man died in a weekend accident. 18-year old Brian Hoeflinger died in a crash early Saturday morning. An autopsy report found he was drinking before the accident. Tonight, leaders at St. John's Jesuit tell us they're talking to students hoping this weekend's tragedy will prevent other young men from drinking and driving.
CRYSTAL BOWERSOX CONCERT
Northwest Ohio's own American Idol runner-up is headed back to Toledo. We're following this story with our media partner The Toledo Blade. Crystal Bowersox is set to perform at the Seagate Centre March 3.. Tickets are $37. Part of the money from ticket sales will benefit the Toledo School for the Arts, which is where Bowersox went to school.
SCHOOL LUNCHES
(AP) - The number of lower-income school children in Ohio receiving free or reduced-price lunches has decreased for the first time in six years. Numbers from the Ohio Department of Education show that nearly 820,000 youngsters are getting subsidized meals this school year. That's 44.4 percent - a slight decline from the 45.3 percent enrolled in the program last year.
NEW MEDICAID SYSTEM
(AP) - Ohio is closer to replacing an outdated system that's known for rejecting eligible people from the Medicaid program. Officials say the state will contract with Accenture LLC for a new system that will help determine eligibility for programs across Ohio's health and human services agencies.
WORST TRAFFIC
(AP) - A national study says Columbus has Ohio's worst traffic. The annual Urban Mobility Report by researchers at Texas A&M says a typical Columbus-area rush-hour commuter spends 40 hours a year in jammed traffic. That's tops in the state. The Columbus Dispatch says that's two hours above the national average.
NO SATURDAY MAIL
(AP) - Some customers say they aren't surprised that the Postal Service plans cut back to five-day-a-week mail service. The plan, which is to take effect in August, brought vigorous objections from farmers, the letter carriers' union and some lawmakers. But one customer says she never writes letters and doesn't sit around waiting on her mail.
BOY SCOUTS AND GAYS
(AP) - The Boy Scouts of America is putting off a decision on whether to ease its policy of excluding gays because of what it describes as the "complexity" of the issue. The Scouts made the announcement today after deliberations by the national executive board. The board will now prepare a resolution to be voted on by the 1,400 voting members of the BSA national council at a meeting in late May.
CLERGY ABUSE
(AP) - The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles says it's releasing additional documents from internal clergy abuse files. Alleged victims complained that 12,000 pages released last week were missing critical memos and contained excessive redactions.
