The weather today was perfect for the annual Erie City Special Olympics ski meet at Peek n' Peak.
The event kicked off with a march of the athletes, followed by the lighting of the caldron. And enouraging words from the master of ceremonies, WICU-WSEE'S Mike Ruzzi.
Then the competition began, with some experienced skiers zooming down the slopes. While many novice cross country skiers struggled a bit.
About 60 athletes took part in the event. And they were cheered on by 65 volunteers, mostly students from Mercyhurst University.
Student Sarah Zaczkiewicz said, "Today is just an incredible experience for all of our volunteers."
Organizers say all the athletes were excited.
Ami Iaquinta of the Erie City Special Olympics said, "They are amped up. This is something they look forward to from the start of the school year."
Peek n' Peak ski instructors also helped out at the meet.
