The Second Harvest Foodbank is joining with the Meals on Wheels program to make emergency rations available to elderly and disabled shut-ins.
They are called "Blizzzard Bags" and provide 8-pounds of non-perishable food that could make the difference in survival in a snowstorm that prevents vehicles from getting through.
The Meals on Wheels program provides hot meals every weekday to eligible clients.
But this year's storms convinced organizers that a back up plan is needed in case the volunteer drivers can't make it through.
"Our mission is really critical that people get fed," Meals on Wheels Executive Director Terry Pitlars told us. "The only way to anticipate a problem or emergency is to give them emergency food so they have it when they need it."
The program is fashioned after other Meals on Wheels Blizzard Bag programs in other communities.
It's the first time it's being tried here. The bags will be given out next week, but organizers hope to get an earlier start next year.
