Brentwood, Tenn. (PRWEB) February 08, 2013

Quorum Health Resources (QHR) client hospital Benewah Community Hospital (BCH) in Saint Maries, Idaho was recently recognized for improved patient safety results by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA’s) Health Research and Educational Trust (HRET). HRET is leading a Hospital Engagement Network to improve patient safety, reduce complications and preventable hospital readmissions and save lives.

The 19-bed critical access hospital has reduced readmissions by two-thirds, from 11 percent in February 2012 to 4 percent in August 2012. BCH has submitted data to HRET for 5 of the 10 measures targeted as high priority by CMS: prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), surgical site infections (SSI), obstetrical events, patient falls, and preventable re-admissions.

“The entire healthcare industry is facing unprecedented changes,” said QHR President and CEO James L. Horrar. “Benewah’s strong leadership and dedication to the patients have been the drivers behind continually improved patient safety outcomes. We are proud to see a QHR client hospital recognized for providing excellent care to their community.”

“We are focused on providing high-quality care to improve health outcomes for our patients,” said Mike LaPlante, board chair of BCH. “As always the goal of Benewah’s Board, administration, physicians, nurses and staff is to keep our community healthy.”

HRET, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, received a two-year contract from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to support the Partnership for Patients campaign. Partnership for Patients is a new public-private partnership launched by the Obama administration. The effort combines hospitals, employers, physicians, nurses and patient advocates along with state and federal governments to make hospital care safer, more reliable, and less costly.
