You can celebrate Fat Tuesday and help animals in need. The annual Pardi Paws Mardi Gras event benefits the Toledo Animal Shelter. The shelter has been part of our community for more than 80 years and they find homes for hundreds of cats and dogs every year.
The shelter usually cares for about 60 dogs and cats at a time. They get no government funding so they rely on donations to help care for the animals. Helen Bensch is the shelter Director,"Our adoption fees are just a fraction of what it costs us to take care of the animals. We spend an average of $400-$500 per animal on things like vaccinations, de-worming and the spay or neuter surgery, but we spend that money because we want to make sure all of our animals are well cared for. We really need this money to help off set those costs."
The Pardi Paws Mardi Gras party is Tuesday, February 12 from 6-9pm at the Holiday Inn French Quarter along Route 20 in Perrysburg. There will be a full menu of Louisiana cuisine, along with a silent auction and a Dixieland band.
