Gun control is expected to be a big topic, in President Obama's State of the Union Address Tuesday. On the eve of that address, Mercyhurst University's Center for Applied Politics released the results its most recent statewide poll. It allowed Pennsylvania voters to sound off on the subject of gun violence and mass shootings.
Students conducting the poll had no troubling finding people to respond. They polled 485 registered voters across the state on policy ideas to reduce gun violence. Dr. Rolfe Peterson, methodologist for the poll, said 56% of those surveyed don't support the idea of training some teachers to be armed in schools in case of emergency.
The poll did find that those polled favor universal background checks. "Universal background checks are almost universally approved, in our survey it was 86%," said Peterson. He added, "Another measure extremely supported are mental health screenings, not only as a solution to these mass shootings and how to prevent them but also as a policy change."
