The Meals on Wheels program has begun delivering 350 "Blizzard Bags" along with normal hot meal deliveries.
Since World War Two the program has used volunteer drivers to get hot food to the elderly or shut-in communities.
But in recent years concern has grown over what happens when a snowstorm keeps the volunteers from getting to those who need the food.
The Blizzard Bag program is a partnership with Meals on Wheels and the Second Harvest Food Bank to deliver an eight pound bag of non-perishable groceries that can be used in an emergency.
It also delivers peace of mind, for the clients and for the drivers.
"If we had anything like New England they wouldn't have food for 2 or three days," driver Barbara Brairton told us, "I get worried that I can't get out and I don't know what I'd do."
This is the first year for the new program in this area.
