TPD wants $380,00 for Sky Cop System

The Toledo Police Department wants City Council to approve an additional $380,000 for its Sky Cop system. They want to purchase software to keep track of crime.

Councilman Michael D. Collins wants TPD administrators to reconsider. "Why can't we translate that into street strength. Because without street strength, I don't care how many cameras you put out there. Cameras do not put handcuffs on people. Cameras do not make arrests."

Police say the software would help police discover trends in crimes and where they might occur. City Council members say they want to see evidence that Sky Cops really decreases crime.

Police administrators say there's not enough data recorded yet to say if the cameras are effective. But they say they've seen crime in hot-spot areas dry up.

The department expects to install an additional 70 cameras by June and that they need the software to fight crime.
