Cheering for cure. This weekend marks the 9th Annual Stella Bertz Cheer for a Cure. The cheerleading competition draws students from all across Northwest Ohio.
Last year this community-based fundraiser raised $20,000.
The friendly competition is named in honor of former Genoa Cheerleading Coach Stella Bertz, who lost her battle with lung cancer nine years ago.
Since it was established in 2005, it's raised over $100,000 for cancer research.
Now, the cheerleading competition has grown to a national level.
Saturday about 76 squads will perform 101 performances to about 8,000 people. The squads range from pee-wee to college and will compete for the Championship Title.
The money raised, the entry fees and the 50/50 raffle will go to Ohio State University's James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
The squads may be competing against each other but they are all fighting for a cure for cancer.
The competition was held at Genoa Area High School on North Genoa Clay-Center Road.
The Stella Bertz Cheer for a Cure Fund is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. All sponsorships, donations and gifts are tax deductible.
