Snow squalls that lead to pile-ups leave very thin blanket of snow

Posted: Updated:
MOSCOW, Michigan -

A few intense snow squalls crossed the area at midday this Saturday, dropping visibilities under 1/4 mile, and leading to at least four chain-reaction accidents, involving a total of more than 100 vehicles.  You can read more about the accidents here.

By the numbers, the snow was not that impressive.  This goes to show how even a light accumulation can be extremely dangerous.

By early evening, here are the reports we've received:

3.0" ... Moscow, Hillsdale County, MI
2.0" ... Sandusky, Erie County, OH
1.9" ... Tompkins, Jackson County, MI
1.5" ... Addison, Lenawee County, MI
1.1" ... Litchfield, Hillsdale County, MI
1.0" ... Jackson, Jackson County, MI
0.1" ... Toledo, Lucas County, OH

Snow showers and flurries will continue tonight, but they will be less intense than Saturday's daytime snow squalls.  The final flurries will exit Erie and Huron Counties on Sunday morning.
